Crossbuck Fence Install Guide

A crossbuck fence uses horizontal rails plus diagonal braces that create the classic “X” look. It is popular for estate entrances, horse/ranch style properties, long driveway runs, and decorative boundary fencing.

Typical layout

  • Posts: 6x6 posts are stronger and cleaner for estate-style or long runs. 4x4 posts can work for lighter decorative sections, but 6x6 looks better and holds up better.
  • Post spacing: common planning spacing is 8 ft on center when using 8 ft rails. Confirm actual board length and terrain before setting posts.
  • Rails: 5/4x6x8 or rough-cut 1.25 in boards can be used depending on desired look and supplier availability.
  • Crossbuck diagonals: measure each bay after posts are set. Do not assume every bay is exactly identical on uneven ground.
  • Fasteners: exterior-rated structural screws or ring-shank nails; stainless/hot-dip galvanized where moisture and tannins are a concern.

Install steps

  1. Walk the fence line and mark corners, gates, transitions and slope changes.
  2. Set string lines and mark post centers. Keep gate posts heavier and better braced.
  3. Dig holes below frost depth where required by local conditions. Common planning depth is around 1/3 post height, but site/code conditions control final depth.
  4. Set posts plumb with concrete. Brace posts until cured enough to hold alignment.
  5. Install top/bottom rails level or stepped with grade, depending on desired look.
  6. Measure diagonals per bay, cut crossbuck boards, test fit, then fasten.
  7. Add wire backing if needed, trim posts, install caps, clean up, and document final run lengths.

Field note: On long runs, do not rely only on math. String line the run, mark grade changes, and measure each bay after posts are set. Small differences become expensive when repeated across hundreds of feet.
5-Rail Fence

5-Rail Fence Layout Guide

A 5-rail fence gives a heavier, cleaner, estate-style appearance. It is useful for large properties, long driveway lines, ranch-style boundaries and areas where the fence needs to look premium from the road.

Planning notes

  • Use consistent rail spacing and check the reveal between rails before fastening the full run.
  • Use 6x6 posts for premium appearance, long runs, corners and gates.
  • On slopes, decide early between stepped sections or following grade.
  • Use brace posts or heavier posts at gates and directional changes.

Wire Backing

Wire backing helps keep small animals in or out while preserving the look of a wood rail fence. For cleaner results, install wire on the less-visible side when possible and keep tension even.

  • Plan wire height, overlap, staples and termination points before ordering rolls.
  • Use exterior staples or fencing staples appropriate for the post/rail material.
  • Overlap wire sections at posts, not mid-bay when possible.
  • Use a stretcher or temporary pull boards for cleaner tension on long runs.
  • For pets, verify bottom gaps near uneven grade.

Posts + Concrete

4x4 vs 6x6 Posts and Concrete Planning

Post sizing depends on fence style, height, soil, gate loads, wind exposure, and desired appearance. 6x6 posts cost more but give a premium look and better stiffness for estate-style work.

General planning logic

  • 4x4 posts: lighter fence sections, shorter runs, budget installs, small gates.
  • 6x6 posts: premium estate look, gate posts, corners, long runs, stronger visual presence.
  • Concrete: estimate by hole diameter/depth, not just post count. Larger posts and gate posts need more planning.
  • Drainage: crown concrete away from posts and avoid trapping water at grade.

Always confirm local code, frost depth, soil, utilities, easements, and property lines before digging.

Material Notes

Quarter-Sawn Rough Cut White Oak / Red Oak Notes

Rough cut 1.25 in oak boards can look strong and premium, but ordering must account for width variation, moisture, movement, knots, checking, waste, end cuts and finish plan.

  • White oak: generally preferred outdoors over red oak because it is more rot-resistant due to closed-cell structure.
  • Red oak: can look good but is generally less ideal for outdoor exposure unless protected and maintained carefully.
  • Quarter-sawn boards: more dimensionally stable and premium-looking, but typically cost more and may have supply limits.
  • Rough cut thickness: plan actual finish thickness and fastener length before ordering.
  • Waste factor: add extra for defects, cuts, sorting, warping, checking and color matching.

Field Measuring

Measuring Angles Correctly

Angles matter on crossbuck braces, gates, corners, rails on slopes, stair transitions and diagonal boards. The easiest mistake is cutting from assumed dimensions instead of field measurements.

Practical method

  1. Set posts first and brace them plumb.
  2. Measure the actual opening width and height between rails.
  3. Mark the board in place when possible instead of relying only on theoretical angles.
  4. Use a speed square, bevel gauge or digital angle finder for repeat cuts.
  5. Cut one template piece and test fit before batch cutting all matching pieces.

Tip: For crossbuck braces, label each bay before cutting. Bay 1A and Bay 1B may not match Bay 2A/B if posts or grade shift slightly.
